Provincetown Restaurants Remain Closed, Sewer Emergency Persists

Town officials say they're making progress in fixing the problem, but the sewer emergency remains in place as of Friday morning.

PROVINCETOWN, MA — The sewer emergency for properties on the vacuum sewer system in Provincetown remains in place as town officials say they're making progress.

An update from the town on Friday morning said crews worked overnight to fix a portion of the vacuum line, but have yet to completely right the ship. This means properties, including those on Commercial Street between Snow and Point Streets, and properties on Bradford Street between Conwell and Prince Streets, remain affected.

The sewer emergency doesn't apply to properties on the town's gravity system or with on-site septic systems. The town provided a complete list of addresses affected by the emergency.

Food service businesses and restaurants remain closed on Friday, unless they're selling prepackaged, ready to eat food. Residential properties are also instructed to limit water use, which includes laundry, showering and even flushing toilets.

Town officials estimated on Thursday that crews would need at least 48 hours to completely fix the problem, and noted on Friday that updates would be provided in the early afternoon, or even sooner if significant changes happen.

"We are hopeful that we are getting closer to full restoration, but we can't say for sure until every part of the system has been addressed," officials said in an update.

If the initial timeline is correct, it doesn't appear like business closures would directly impact Provincetown Carnival events like the Feet Over Front Street 5K.

A few local businesses have updated their clientele via social media of their status, including Sal's Place on Commercial Street.

The famed Lobster Pot will also be closed as the sewer problems continue, but noted that their Wellfleet location is open.

Spiritus Pizza announced they'll be open during the sewer emergency, as they were given approval by the town thanks to their own septic system, they said on Instagram.
