Red Raiders Escape With Win Over Durfee

In spite of shooting 32.65% from the floor, the host Barnstable Red Raiders went to 12-3 on the season last night with a 67-63 win over B.M.C. Durfee High School in Hyannis.

They say a good basketball team needs an even better bench when hitting the final stretch of the regular season.

With a postseason already firmly clinched, and coming off a tough OCL road loss last week to Taunton, the Barnstable Red Raiders regrouped last night in Hyannis and rode the hot hand of Justin Alvaran's 15 points off the bench to a 67-63 victory over the Durfee Hilltoppers last night in Hyannis.

Alvaran scored 9 of his 15 points in the second half and his effort was bolstered by a remarkable 12-point performance from Dylan Morris who went 6-9 from the floor in his hottest game of the season. Jason Eddy was no slouch, either, dumping in 10 of his 16-point total in the second half and adding six rebounds. Nick Peabody had a solid, 10-rebound game beneath the glass and Everett Walsh had six rebounds as well, while head coach Gerry McDowell slowly but surely re-entered big man Charlie Rice back into the fray.

Rice was utilized sparingly versus Taunton last week, but he garnered considerably more playing time last night versus Durfee. He finished with four (4) points and six rebounds. Other point tallies for BHS included Jake Kipnes with (7) points, four assists and four steals, Tedaro France had (3) points and Walsh and Travis Kendrew each had (2) points. Kendrew added three rebounds and three assists.

But all totalled, the Red Raiders shot 16-49 from the floor and went 7-20 from beyond the arc (35.00%).

Durfee's Curtis Cobb dumped in a game-high 34 points on the night, including a 7-9 performance from three-point land. No other Durfee player finished in double-figures.

The two opponents were tied after the first quarter, 17-17 and Durfee took a 34-33 lead into the intermission, but Barnstable came roaring back to post a 55-48 lead after three quarters of play, thanks to some hard-nosed defense and the continued hot hands of Alvaran, Morris and Eddy.

BHS is 3-1 in the Old Colony League and 12-3 overall with a game on the road Friday night versus Bridgewater-Raynham.
