Red Raiders Swamp Warriors in Season-Opener

The defending Old Colony League Champion Barnstable handily defeated the visiting Nauset last night in Hyannis, 71-27, in what may have been the lowest total point output by Nauset in a game versus BHS in Red Raider history.

It has been said that your best offense is a great defense.

Pouring on a stifling, relentless defensive effort, the varsity basketball team (1-0) opened its 2011-12 season by making a statement versus the visiting Nauset Regional Warriors (0-1) in a 71-27 rout in Hyannis.

The defending Old Colony League champion Red Raiders depended heavily on the offense of seniors Charlie Rice and Everett Walsh in the first half, as the pair scored 8 and 7 points, respectively, to pace the Red & White to a 25-11 halftime lead. It was almost all Barnstable would need to win the game, incredibly, as BHS ended the rout after two halves with a 71-27 victory.

The first half scoring differential may have been considerably wider for Nauset had Barnstable not turned the ball over eight times in combination with 11 fouls committed, but the Red Raiders' defense more than made up for it as the home squad scored many of its points in defensive transition. While Barnstable committed 13 turnovers in all, it countered that with 19 steals and 34 total team rebounds. Peabody was the second highest rebounder for BHS with five on the night. Rice, Kendrew, Kipnes and Morris each tallied three steals on the night.

Barnstable also relied on pinpoint foul shooting in the first half and finished 83.33 percent for the night from the charity stripe. The Red Raiders head to Dennis-Yarmouth on Friday night, Dec. 16, to face the Dolphins and first-year head coach Chuck Kipnes, the former Red Raider junior varsity coach.
