Barnstable High School Red Raiders Walk Off With Win Over New Bedford Whalers

Facing perhaps their toughest non-league opponent, the Barnstable High Red Raiders took victory in dramatic fashion late Monday afternoon as senior pinch-hitter Tim Biliouris drove in Everett Walsh and Sam Holway with a game-winning, two-RBI single.

What a way to end a ballgame.

Down 3-2 to the visiting New Bedford Whalers Monday afternnon, Barnstable High School's Everett Walsh (1-2, 2 runs scored) led off the bottom of the seventh with a four-pitch walk. Fellow senior Sam Holway then laced a double down the left-field line to put two men in scoring position and the stage was set for the end-of-game dramatics.

Senior Tim Biliouris, who came in to pinch hit for Derek Estes - a sophomore getting his first-ever taste of varsity - took two pitches for balls against the Whalers' righty Mike Repoza. Biliouris then fouled one off and then Repoza fed the Red Raider a meaty fastball which was ripped into straightaway center. Walsh and Holway came speeding home and Barnstable snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, 4-3.

The team celebrated at home plate as if it had just won the World Series.

Biliouris' hit could not have come at a better time for the Red and White as the squad was coming off a 10-day layoff from games right in the middle of the season. Barnstable now stands at 11-3.

The win gave righty George Bent (2-0) his second win of the 2012 campaign as the senior hurler turned in his second straight complete-game performance. Struggling slightly in the early going, Bent settled quickly and found his rhythm, striking out seven of the last 12 batters he faced in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

New Bedford jumped on top quickly in this one, with a pair of runs in the top of the first to go ahead, 2-0. Barnstable answered in the bottom of the frame with one run as Luke Besse (2-3, run) singled, went to third on a wild pick-off attempt, then scored on a passed ball.

New Bedford picked up another run in the top of the third inning to make it 3-1 on a pair of basehits.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Everett Walsh singled to lead things off, but took second when the ball caromed off the leftfielder's mitt. Walsh eventually scored on a beautiful sacrifice fly on a hit and run by catcher Denny Beynor. The score was 3-2 until the aformentioned bottom of the seventh.

Barnstable heads to Taunton today.
