Self-Identifying 'Sovereign Citizen' Leads Cape Cod Police On Chase

A man with multiple warrants led multiple departments on a car chase across three Cape Cod towns ending near the Sagamore Bridge.

CAPE COD, MA — A man who aligns himself with the sovereign citizen movement led police on Cape Cod in a car chase through three towns, eventually ending near the Sagamore Bridge.

Yarmouth police officers attempted to stop a pickup truck driven by Sean Curran, 36, of Stoughton, who was three active arrest warrants on Tuesday.

Following a pursuit through three towns, he was taken into custody by the Massachusetts State Police, officials said.

Uniformed officers and members of the department’s Proactive Anti-Crime (PAC) Unit received information that Curran had been staying in South Yarmouth, and observed his vehicle traveling on Forest Road in South Yarmouth and attempted to stop it.

The truck was unregistered and displayed an “American State National” license plate, something commonly displayed by members of the sovereign citizen movement, officials said.

Curran continued to drive while three police cruisers with lights and sirens followed, police said. The pursuit made its way to the highway and the Massachusetts State Police were notified.

Curran continued traveling with the flow of traffic on Route 6 with Yarmouth police cruisers still behind him. Troopers caught up to Yarmouth Police cruisers near Exit 65, West Barnstable, and took over the pursuit, allowing the Yarmouth police to end their pursuit.

State police continued to pursue Curran, utilizing "vehicle stopping measures" and eventually taking Curran into custody just north of the Sagamore Bridge.
