BARNSTABLE, MA — State officials will allow Barnstable voters to go to the polls until midnight Tuesday following a delay in the start of voting early Tuesday morning.

Town spokeswoman Lynne Poyant said the town clerk's vault was locked and inaccessible early Tuesday morning. That prevented election officials from getting ballots and opening polls at the typical 7 a.m. start time.

Voting was up and running by about 11 a.m. in Barnstable, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

"The Secretary of the Commonwealth's office is exploring all options available to make sure everyone in Barnstable is able to vote today. This may include seeking an order to extend the closing of the polls in Barnstable, if necessary," state officials said in a social media post early Tuesday morning.

Voting typically lasts 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election days in Massachusetts. Polls will still close at 8 p.m. in all other parts of the state.
