WATCH: Rescued Sea Turtles Released Back Into Cape Cod Waters

The sea turtles became cold-stunned in December and were rescued by staff with the Mass. Audubon Society's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

DENNIS, MA — Four rehabilitated loggerhead seat turtles that were rescued from the shores of Cape Cod over the winter were released back into the wild after months of recovery at the New England Aquarium.

The sea turtles became cold-stunned in December and were rescued by staff and volunteers with the Mass. Audubon Society's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. During the fall and winter months, it's common for sea turtles to suffer hypothermia-like symptoms and become cold-stunned as water temperatures decrease.

Once rescued, staff and volunteers brought the turtles to the New England Aquarium in Boston, where they were treated for the hypothermia, as well as pneumonia and bones fractures, all life-threatening conditions for loggerheads.
