BARNSTABLE, MA — Barnstable residents made 155 contributions totaling $23,357 to state representative candidates running in the 1st and 5th Barnstable districts in 2020, according to year-end campaign finance reports filed with the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

The biggest beneficiary in the 1st Barnstable District was Republican incumbent Tim Whelan, who has represented the district since 2015. Whelan has received 23 donations totaling $6,475 in Barnstable.

His Democratic challenger John Mason received seven donations totaling $320.

In the 5th Barnstable District, Republican Randy Hunt chose to not seek re-election. Republican Steven Xiarhos, a former Yarmouth police officer and Sandwich selectman, has been the biggest beneficiary of donations in the district.

Xiarhos has received 119 donations totaling $14,892, while his Democratic opponent James Dever garnered $170 from four donations from Barnstable voters. Xiarhos' defeated primary opponent received two donations totaling $1,500.
