New MA Whole Foods Opening In Refurbished Plaza
Capetown Plaza is set for a major facelift which includes new tenants for the former Kmart plaza.

HYANNIS, MA — After announcing a facelift for the former home to Kmart in Hyannis, officials confirmed that Whole Foods will open a space in the Hyannis Capetown Plaza.
Cape Cod Gateway Airport and Massachusetts-based, mixed-use developer, WS Development, are planning a multi-phase redevelopment of Capetown Plaza. The parties said it will "begin imminently."
Under the plan, the 26-acre property first developed as a retail center in 1968, best known as Kmart Plaza, will be transformed into a "modern lifestyle destination, featuring a refreshed mix of retailers and restaurants, placemaking elements, such as outdoor furniture and many site improvements."

WS Development was awarded the long-term lease of the property, as a result of a proposal process run by the Town of Barnstable in 2018, in anticipation of the previous lease expiring in 2024.
Since, WS Development has worked closely with the Town of Barnstable as well as the Cape Cod Gateway Airport, which controls the property, to develop a plan that is expected to "yield a vital restoration of the site, as well as significant capital to the Airport and town," officials said.

“We are excited to unveil the long-awaited plans for the redevelopment of this central and popular site in Hyannis,” said Katie Servis, Managing Director of Cape Cod Gateway Airport. “We look forward to sharing these plans with the public and discussing the thoughtful multi-phase approach that will be taken to ensure that this shopping area in Hyannis is a destination for locals and visitors alike.”
Some tenant construction is already underway in the former Kmart building, officials said.
Phase one of the project will include major façade upgrades of the main building at the property, remodeling interior spaces and significant improvements to the site including new lighting, paving, landscaping, and a public green with seating.
“We’re thrilled to begin realizing the vision for The Landing and creating a gravitational place for the Cape Cod community at large,” said Amanda Chisholm, Development Director at WS Development. “Our team has greatly appreciated the partnership with the Town of Barnstable; together, we hope to bring to life a welcoming, vibrant experience for all to enjoy.”
