Boston Hungarian- American Community Will Dedicate Memorial to Hungarian Leader at Prudential Center This Weekend

WHAT:

Members of Boston’s Hungarian-American community will gather this weekend to honor their national hero, Sandor Petofi, with a newly installed memorial in the Prudential Center’s Winter Court.  The memorial, a bronze plaque designed by Hungarian artist Laszlo Hunyadi, was made possible through the support and organization of the Hungarian Consulate of Boston, Boston Panorama World Club, and the Hungarian Society of Massachusetts.  The plaque will be affixed on a large stone base and surrounded by a well-known quote from the beloved leader.

Petofi continues to be an important historical figure in Hungarian history.  As an outspoken poet and key leader in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, Petofi authored numerous poems that are remembered by proud Hungarians to this day.  Many of Petofi’s works, such as the widely recognized National Song, continue to hold a special place in the hearts of Hungarians worldwide.

Petofi’s dedication to freedom and democracy make Boston, home of the American Revolution, an appropriate setting for this monument.  The event will include Hungarian dancers performing traditional choreography, readings of Petofi’s poems in both Hungarian and English, and a children’s choir comprised of second generation Hungarian-American children who will sing in Hungarian.
