I’ve never done yoga before, but my doctor recommends it. Where do I begin?

Thank you so much for your email!  Yoga, just like starting anything new can feel daunting at first.  At our yoga studio, Health Yoga Life we often say to students the hardest part of yoga is getting there to take class.  Once you get there everything else is easy.

Here are some tips to consider when wanting to try yoga: 

1.  Yoga Studio Classes. It is a great idea to come to try yoga for the first time at a dedicated yoga studio. Here you can learn from well trained teachers and meet new people. Teachers can help you breakdown the poses and offer modifications to help you find a level of practice that works for you.

2.  Private Instruction. Most studios offer clients private instruction. If you are new to yoga consider signing up for some.

3.  Know this pose.  Child’s pose is an important pose to know.  If you are in class and    you get a little confused or lost as to the steps, always come to this pose. It lets you  catch your breath without disrupting other students.  Here’s what it looks like:

  •  Bring your knees to the mat. Separate your knees and bring your                torso between your thighs. Resting your forehead on the mat,                    stretch your arms in front of you. 

4.   What to bring?  If you have a yoga mat, bring it.  If not most studios rent or sell mats.  It’s also a good idea to bring a towel and some water.  

5.  Which class should I take?  There are a lot of different styles of yoga for certain!  But every class can offer something to the beginning student. So even if you can’t make it to a beginner class try what works for you.  Some classes at Health Yoga Life that are great for beginners include:  Back to Basics,  Kundalini and Restore ‘n Restart.

 6. Give yourself some time.  When you are coming to class for the first time, give yourself 15 minutes to sign-in and settle in.  Introduce yourself to the teacher and tell them it’s your first class.  You don’t want to run into your first yoga class feeling rushed and stressed.
