When Sidney Poitier chose her for the lead in his film “For Love of Ivy,” Abbey Lincoln was an actress adding to her impressive resume as jazz vocalist, feminist, and civil rights activist. This MAAH Music concert honors the legendary singer, outstanding among those who used their artistry and their voice to champion campaigns for justice. “Certain people inside the African-American experience . . . act as griots, bearers of the culture,” singer Cassandra Wilson told Newsweek magazine in 1992. “Paul Robeson was something like that. And so is (Abbey Lincoln).” Nedelka Prescod, one of many inspired by Lincoln’s vocal prowess and unshakeable integrity, is celebrating the late songstress through this concert at MAAH. Prescod is a gifted vocal stylist, musician and educator and a member of the new Contemporary Improvisation faculty at New England Conservatory’s Continuing Education program and an ensemble coach. She also teaches at Berklee College of Music, mentors students from around the region. One young musician studying at UMass Dartmouth, Caiana Luse, will join Prescod as the alternate voice for this tribute.
