Police Tackle Juvenile Accused of Stealing Phone in Boston Common

Police news on Beacon Hill, May 14-17.

Good timing and coordination led to the quick arrest of two boys police say were working together to steal a phone on the Boston Common Wednesday. 

According to police reports, two juveniles were rode their bicycles close to a man and snatched his cell phone as he was talking on it while sitting on a bench in the park at 12:45 p.m.

An officer on duty spotted the boys riding their bikes up Mount Vernon Street and alerted Beacon Hill's community officer, who turned on his blue lights and sirens and headed to the Beacon and Walnut, where the boys were.

Meanwhile, a third officer spotted the suspects and positioned his cruiser to block them. One of the boys turned around and attempted to flee but the Beacon Hill officer ran after him and tackled him against a parked car, which sustained minor damage.

At the same time, the third officer caught the other boy. One of them was found with the stolen phone, police said.

Police brought the victim over, who identified the boys as the thieves, according to police reports. One of the boys will be charged with unarmed robbery, larceny from a person, destruction of personal property and receiving stolen goods. The other will be charged with larceny over $250 and receiving stolen goods.
