LMACS Seeks New Executive Director

A search committee is looking to hire a new LMACS Executive Director as the previous director of 17 years is retiring

When students have been given up on – or have given up on themselves – Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School (LMACS) offers an inclusive and supportive environment that holds its students to high standards and ensures they reach their goals. Dr. Margaret McDevitt will be retiring from LMACS this spring after 17 inspirational and passionate years of service and leadership to the school. Dr. James C. Mabry, President of Middlesex Community College and Chair of LMACS Board of Trustees, announced on Tuesday that a search committee is looking to hire the next LMACS Executive Director.

“Middlesex is proud of the hard work being done for these students at LMACS,” President Mabry said. “As one of the first charter schools in Massachusetts, LMACS has educated thousands of youths from Lowell and the surrounding community since its start. We are seeking a new Executive Director who will continue to guide students on their paths to success and truly make a positive impact on their futures – academically and personally.”

The accredited public charter high school partners with Middlesex to serve students between the ages of 15 and 21 who have left school or are at risk of dropping out. The program provides academic, social and career skills necessary to succeed post-graduation – emphasizing the importance of college education. Graduates of LMACS receive a high school diploma.

This supportive school community identifies, encourages and develops interests and abilities of its students, while acknowledging and respecting each student's personal and cultural identity. The curriculum of LMACS is built around a core of academic subject areas and is supplemented by required psycho-educational courses and career preparation.

LMACS provides all students with a school-to-work component, daily advising, and an opportunity to participate in dual enrollment at Middlesex. The LMACS curriculum reflects MCC’s small size and mission-driven culture. The school was designated a Vanguard School by Massachusetts Insight and is a recipient of the Edgerly Leadership Award in recognition of student achievement on the MCAS.

The search committee – comprised of Trustee members, LMACS staff and community members – will be looking for a candidate who will contribute leadership, enthusiasm and efforts toward the fulfillment of the school’s mission and the development of an innovative learning community that serves the whole student – academically, socially and emotionally – and its diverse student body.

LMACS is seeking an innovative school leader to commit themselves to the urgent and exciting needs of the school’s students and community. The Executive Director is responsible for providing administrative leadership, instructional leadership and student leadership, as well as building community relationships for LMACS.

Details regarding the job posting will be made available later this week in various education job opportunity sites, including MCC’s Human Resources page https://www.middlesex.mass.edu/employmentatmcc/default.aspx
