BELMONT, MA - Belmont Light is urging customers to be on the lookout for a telephone scam that involves callers impersonating staff.

Several residents have received a phone call with a pre-recorded message warning that they would be subjected to increased electric rates if they did not upgrade their meter.

The message specifies that "Belmont Light customers" must schedule an appointment, though the individual does not provide any further identifying details.

Those who received the call have described the tone of the voice as pushy, or threatening.

However, they have not asked for payment up front.

Belmont Light has upgraded all of its customers' electric meters in recent years and would provide written notice before conducting work.

In a written statement, representatives from Belmont Light said the company's employees are required to identify themselves on phone calls. They added that calls would never come from a 1-800 number and rather a specific department.
