Belmont's Delegate Helps Put Mitt Over the Top

Elizabeth Mahoney reports on the roll call and meeting the keynote himself.

Yesterday morning began with our Massachusetts delegation breakfast. Speakers this morning were former Missouri Senator Jim Talent, former Gov. Bill Weld and Massachusetts House of Representative Minority Leader Brad Jones. Talent and Weld spoke in particular about President Obama's record on jobs creation and contrasted it with Mitt Romney's own record, both in the private sector and as governor of Massachusetts.

In the afternoon it was off to the convention hall for our first real day of business. Walking into the hall and onto the convention floor was a special moment for me; I've watched so many conventions on television, and here I am actually participating in one. Not just participating, but nominating a candidate from our very own state and town! Pretty incredible. And the Massachusetts delegation does indeed have great seats. My seat is three rows back from the front and three seats in from the aisle. Our neighboring states include Michigan, Florida, New Hampshire and Ohio.

Throughout the course of the afternoon, the enthusiasm and energy from all the delegates was electric. We truly believe in the Romney/Ryan ticket and what they could accomplish for our country if they are elected.

As delegates, we cast a number of votes on official business, such as accepting committee reports and electing the officers of the convention. There were also a number of speeches from elected officials and candidates for Congress and Senate.

Finally, it was on to the roll call of the states. The roll call was done alphabetically. As it got closer to Massachusetts' turn, press started to gather around our delegation and I began to feel a little emotional about this big moment. Finally it was our turn and former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey cast our delegation's votes for Mitt Romney for President of the United States! I had chills. New Jersey's delegation officially put Romney over the top and made him the official Republican nominee for President. I am so glad I could be there for that historic moment.

After the roll call for president, we officially nominated Paul Ryan for Vice President. We then went into recess and return in a bit for yesterday's speeches, including Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. I actually ran into Christie in our hotel today and got a picture with him!
