Belmont Veteran Featured Speaker At Town Purple Heart Day Ceremony

USMC Col. Michael Callanan will head the ceremony on Aug. 7.

BELMONT, MA – The Town of Belmont will formally observe National Purple Heart Day, Veteran Service Officer Bob Upton announced Thursday. The town will hold its Observance and Recognition Ceremony at the Belmont Public Library on Monday, Aug. 7 at 10 a.m.

The featured guest speaker for the event will be USMC Col. Michael Callanan, a Belmont resident who served as an operations officer in Iraq and battalion commander in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, he led a 1,000-person team that removed life-threatening devices across complex geography.

Chartered by congress in 1958, the Military Order of the Purple Heart is comprised of military men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds sustained in combat. The organization supports nationwide programs for veterans and their families.

The Belmont Veteran Service Office is reaching out to Purple Heart recipients and their family members to attend this event. The public is invited to attend and honor the country's Purple Heart recipients.
