Kick Back with a Good Summer Read

Belmont librarian recommends "Wives and Daughters" by Elizabeth Gaskell.

Summer is a good time to kick back and read a long novel.  One of the best long novels that I’ve read is "Wives and Daughters" by the nineteenth-century British writer Elizabeth Gaskell.  The pace of the novel is leisurely as Gaskell unfolds this tale of Molly Gibson and her family and friends.  Molly lives in the little town of Hollingford and experiences various trials, including her widower father’s ill-considered remarriage.  These trials are rendered with psychological precision.  As Molly faces the difficulties of living with her new stepmother and stepsister, and deepens her relationships with the members of a family of a nearby village, she grows in knowledge of herself and others.  For more book recommendations visit the Belmont Public Library’s online Reader’s Corner.   Don’t miss our newly added list of favorite summer reads.
