Fern Hill drew the attention of music director Jamie Kirsch as a modern but accessible and pleasing piece that combines “unbeatable poetry” with colorful instrumentation.
Franz Schubert wrote his Mass in E-Flat Major in the last year of his life, at age 31. Composed shortly after the young composer served as torchbearer at Beethoven’s funeral, the Mass is a monumental piece that builds on the legacy of Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, while manifesting the romantic explorations that were tragically cut short by his early death.
