Home Front Theater Reminisces Down Memory Lane With James Cagney

 

 

(LONG BEACH, CA; July 17, 2012) – On Friday, July 20^th at 1:00 pm, Long Beach residents are invited to step back into the 1940s with the classic World War II motion picture,

 

Yankee Doodle Dandy

. The motion picture is the third of seven films for this year’s “Home Front Theater” movie series at the El Dorado Senior Center, located at 2800 Studebaker Road, Long Beach.

The Parks and Recreation Senior Services Department, Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, and the Long Beach Rosie The Riveter Foundation annually host a collection of classic films from the World War II era, as part of a "Home Front Theater" program. The movie series was launched in May to commemorate Armed Services Day, with a showing of one movie each month until the end of December.

“There is a deep history of Long Beach’s participation in World War II,” says Councilwoman Schipske. “Our city contributed much to the war effort. We have generations of family members who hold dear memories of loved ones who fought to defend this country and who served on the home front making airplanes and ships. These movies and newsreels from that era are a fun way to remind us of what it was like here in Long Beach during World War II.”

 

 

In Yankee Doodle Dandy, James Cagney plays George M. Cohan - a well renowned American entertainer who was known professionally as a playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer and producer. Mr. Cohan was responsible for writing and composing more than three-dozen Broadway musicals between the eras of World War I and World War II. Yankee Doodle Dandy, which was released in 1942, earned James Cagney an Academy Award for his marvelous singing renditions and dancing performances from songs that included Over Here, and Give My Regards to Broadway

The movie will be played in the Bridge Room of the El Dorado Senior Center. The following movies are scheduled at the same location for the remainder of the year: Air Force on August 17th,

 

So Proudly We Hail on September 21st, Mrs. Miniver on October 19th, The Philadelphia Story

on November 16th, and White Christmas on December 14^th. All movies begin at 1 pm.

Walmart will provide refreshments during the showing of the classic motion picture. The Office of Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske will hand out
