Foggy Mountain Consort & complementary bands have come up with a delightfully diverse concert for the coffeehouse tonight, exploring the connections between the Renaissance and Bluegrass and much in-between.
Starting us off tonight are the Renaissonics -- a jazzy Renaissance dance band (a what?!) featuring John Tyson, virtuoso recorder player and Doug Freundlich, local lutenist extraordinaire. Suites of dances and diverse instrumental music infused with lively rhythms and improvisations make a perfect connection between ancient and contemporary music.
Then the FM Consort takes over with a river of great new/old music for lute (Peter Lehman), banjo (Lauck Benson), fiddle (Art Schatz), bass (Doug Freundlich) and voice/guitar (Anne Goodwin). Who could imagine a banjo break in a Dowland song, or the lute on Shenandoah Breakdown?

Then, Art moves over to play with the Susanne Salem-Schatz and Martin Grosswendt duo for an acoustic from their twangy roots country band, Honky Tonk Masquerade, showcased this year at the Joe Val Festival. Naturally, some, if not all, FM Consort players will join in for some joyous noise to finish off the night.
