The Foundation for Belmont Education, a non-profit group that supports educational excellence and enrichment in the Belmont Public Schools, is pleased to announce that the third annual Dan Scharfman Memorial Run will be held on Sunday, October 4th. The Memorial Run takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Both the 5K and 2K race options begin at the Belmont High School Track, 221 Concord Avenue, and take runners through a scenic route past the town’s schools as well as the Payson Park Reservoir and Clay Pond. Awards follow each race’s end, including prizes for children of all ages. Registration for the USATF-certified and sanctioned event is available through the FBE website, www.fbe-belmont.org/race.
The Dan Scharfman Memorial Run is a community race held in memorial of the late Dan Scharfman, a dedicated advocate of technology and innovation in education. Last year, over 500 runners competed in the two races, and more than $25,000 was raised for the Dan Scharfman Education Innovation Fund, which supports the FBE’s Innovative Teaching Initiative (ITI). The multi-year ITI is a $450,000 program providing teachers with the training and resources that support instruction in all curriculum areas. The goal of the ITI is to help all grade levels reach curriculum milestones via project-based, differentiated learning techniques. The funds raised from the Dan Scharfman directly support the FBE’s focus on training and preparation - a best-practices approach that recognizes that technology is most impactful to the educational process when put in the service of skilled, trained teachers.
In partnership with the Belmont Public School system, the FBE supports the community’s interest in ensuring educators and students alike are given the best tools, technology and training to foster innovation and love of learning. The FBE’s ITI initiative is reflective of how the Belmont community is coming together to support innovative curriculum enrichment across the school system.

About The Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE)
The Foundation is a community-sponsored, non-profit, charitable organization run by volunteers. The FBE was founded in 1993 to support educational excellence and enrichment in the Belmont Public Schools and is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization dedicated to making a difference in the Belmont Public Schools. Thanks to donations from thousands of Belmont residents and businesses over the years, the FBE has granted more than $2.8 million to the Belmont Public Schools to support numerous projects initiated and organized by administrators, teachers and staff. While the Foundation cannot substitute for public support of education through tax dollars, the funds it raises play a pivotal role in fostering the creativity of teachers, engaging the interest of students, and sustaining the tradition of excellence that has characterized the Belmont Public Schools for so many years.
