State Orders Water Emergency Use Ban
At the request of the Metropolitan District Commission to the Belmont Board of Water Commissions, a ban was immediately instituted prohibiting the use of water for lawn sprinkling, swimming pools, car or driveway washing, fountains and air conditioning units not equipped with recirculating devices. Violators could lose their water supply.

Brief Monsoon Hits Belmont
Within one hour, torrential rains fell on Belmont and the surrounding area – totaling half an inch. Catch basins and storm drains were simply unable to handle the sudden rush of water. Streets were turned into pools.
Man Killed on Pleasant Street When Car, Oil Truck Collide
Brake failure caused an oil truck to hit the car of Ray R. Cunningham currently of South Acton. He was the father of two and had spent most of his life in Arlington. After colliding with the car, the truck rolled over onto the car. Cunningham was found dead on arrival at Sancta Maria Hospital.

Clark St. Bridge Reopens
A mysterious fire and explosion had closed the bridge on July 8. The bridge is owned by the B & M Railroad, but there had been some question as to who should be responsible for maintenance – the town or the railway company. This repair was paid for by the railway company. At one point, there had been a movement to close the bridge, but the Selectmen determined it to be essential to traffic in Belmont.

140 Stitches Taken Girl, 6, Is Badly Mauled By Dog; May Lose An Eye
Six-year-old Christian Schmidt, daughter of Mrs. Diane Schmidt of Baker Street was attacked by a neighborhood dog she knew. She told her family later that she had just wanted to pat the dog. The attack was so serious that the dog’s teeth bit through Christine’s chin, loosened some teeth, and damaged her gums. After treatment at Santa Maria she was rushed to Massachusetts Eye and Ear so specialists could try and save her eye.
