David Humphrey was elected to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors for the West Suburban YMCA after serving as their Treasurer since 2013. Serving alongside Humphrey as board officers are: Vice Chair, Gloria Gavris, who served as Chair of the Y’s Annual Fund for the past two years; Treasurer, Bob Bachman; and Clerk, Gretchen Friend, who served as Vice Chair since 2013. In addition, the Y welcomed four new volunteers to their board, Newton residents Andrew Gluck, Shana Maldonado, Janice Rogers and Nicole Waheed.

Humphrey, a Newton resident, is a Managing Director at Bain Capital, where he has worked since 2001. In Newton, David served on the Citizens Advisory Group, helping the city analyze its fiscal challenges. As a child and a young adult, David attended and worked for a YMCA camp in New Hampshire for 14 summers, eventually serving as Program Director and a member of the senior staff. He graduated from Harvard College and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

“The West Suburban YMCA has been an important part of the suburban Boston community for over 138 years,” noted Humphrey. “I am honored to lead a talented and committed group of volunteer board members and staff. Through the main campus facility in Newton, Camp Chickami’s day camp located in Wayland and Camp Frank A. Day’s resident camp in East Brookfield, the Y has the tools to help create and inspire our future leaders.”

When asked about his immediate priorities, Humphrey said, “The Y will embark on a full-scale community assessment and strategic planning initiative that will guide our work over the next several years. In addition, I believe that in order for communities to succeed, everyone must be given the opportunity to have access to programs and services that will allow them to become healthy, confident, connected and secure. The Y will continue to leverage on the generosity of its members and community partners to help ensure everyone can be part of the Y.”

Jack Fucci, President and CEO added, “The community benefits when the Y has such talented volunteers like David leading our organization. His personal experiences and affinity for the Y coupled with his business and operational expertise will help strengthen our organization for years to come. I am excited to work side by side with David and the other board volunteers.”

The Y recognized the hard work of outgoing Board Chair, Sandy Butzel, who has volunteered for the Y for over 15 years. During her tenure as Chairwoman, Butzel oversaw a nationwide search for a new President and CEO, as well as the restructuring of board and trustee policies and committees to create a more productive Board of Directors.
