Yum Bunnies at War! Cupcake Wars, That Is [Video]

Belmont's own cakery set to do battle tonight in Food Network's combat among cupcake chefs.

When Jessa Sahakian got the call this winter from The Food Network, her first thought was one of surprise.

"How did you find me?" the 29-year-old owner of on Belmont Street asked the production person.

Not that the Watertown native and resident doesn't know a thing or two about show business: In the four years that Sahakian decided to make the leap and open her small operation in Belmont, in which her cake – one of nine she made for the production – played a pivotal role in the film's big gag scene.

In fact, a Food Network scout found her and knew that one item that she creates in her shop is cupcakes.

"Then they asked me if I wanted to be on 'Cupcake Wars,'" said Sahakian, a competition show where four bakeries fight it out to win $10,000 and have their creations presented at a big-time party in Los Angeles where the show is produced.

And while Sahakian is better known for her creative and custom-made cakes, "I mean, how could I say no to the Food Network?"

So after creating two audition tapes – "They said they knew that I would be a great person on the show but the first tape 'sucked' and asked me to do another," said the 2000 graduate from Watertown High School who went on to the prestigious Johnson and Wales culinary school in Rhode Island for college – Sahakian and a friend were flown to the West Coast and several days of shooting the show.

While she can not tell what exactly happened on the episode – A Food Network release says that this week's show: "Four out-of-this-world cupcake bakers will fight for the chance to have their tasty treats front and center at a VIP party honoring the first man in space" – Sahakian said she has a great time despite coming during a cold snap.

"We had to buy sweatshirts. I mean, it's California," she said, although she and her friend did spend time getting to know the local In And Out Burger restaurant.

To find out how Sahakian did on the show, you can watch the episode tonight at 8 p.m. on the Food Network and on Sunday at 5 p.m.
