Beverly Drawbridge Malfunction Caused MBTA Delays

Trains were running late Friday due to a malfunction at the bridge, the MBTA said.

BEVERLY, MA — That drawbridge that required a near-monthlong shutdown of the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line was already causing problems for the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line, just five days after reopening.

The MBTA was sending out alerts Friday afternoon of delayed trains. The alerts said it was due to a "malfunction of the Beverly Draw Bridge." The delays were relatively modest - 20-30 minutes - but not what commuters were expecting after a nearly monthlong closure.

The MBTA needed to replace the drawbridge's 104-foot swing span as part of a project that took over $16 million.
