BEVERLY, MA — Beverly police are warning residents not to respond to calls for money from those who appear to be calling from the police station itself.

Police said they are investigating several incidents in which residents receive a call from a police department number demanding money as restitution for crimes or to settle up for an Amazon package that was ordered.

"The Beverly Police Department will never contact citizens in an effort to get money from you to pay for crimes," police said. "If you receive this call or a similar call, do not furnish any information to the caller.

Beverly is the latest North Shore police department to report an increase in this type of scam after Massachusetts State Police said some residents were similarly "spoofed" with calls that appeared to be coming from the Danvers barracks.

"Please be assured that no barracks or unit would call people asking for any kind of personal information," State police said.
