Fate Of Beverly's First Schoolhouse Uncertain After Crash
A truck caused an estimated $100,000 in damage Sunday when it drove into the town's first schoolhouse, which dates back to 1672.

BEVERLY, MA -- The owner of Beverly's first schoolhouse believes the building sustained nearly $100,000 in damage when a pickup truck drove into it Sunday afternoon. Michael Panzero, a contractor who specializes in restoring historic buildings, has been renovating the building on Essex Street. No one was in the building at the time and the driver of the truck sustained minor injuries.
"The house took a big, big hit," Panzero told the Salem News, which first reported this story. Panzero told the newspaper the building was constructed in 1672 in an unknown location in 1672. After serving as a church, it was moved to its current location in 1716 and became Beverly's first grammar school.
