MA Microburst: Logan Resumes Flights; Power Nearly Restored
A microburst hit Logan Airport — grounding hundreds of flights — while thunderstorms knocked out power to thousands across the state.

BOSTON — Logan Airport resumed normal operations Thursday morning and power was restored to most of 13,000 across eastern Massachusetts after powerful thunderstorms and a microburst hit the region. The microburst, a downward draft capable of producing 100 mph winds, hit Logan Wednesday at about 4 p.m,., grounding hundreds of flights. Winds hit 70 mph and higher, according to the National Weather Service.
Meanwhile, strong winds from thunderstorms knocked out power to at least 13,000, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. Power lines and trees were downed across the region. Somerville was hit hardest — more than 5,600 lost power in that city. By Thursday morning, there were only about a dozen still without power in Somerville. Statewide, there were about 400 outages.
The rain storms did little to break the record-setting heat for July, as temperatures hovered around 90 degrees all day to cap a heat wave. It will be slightly cooler Thursday, with highs in the mid-80s. There's "a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms" in the afternoon. NWS said. Friday will be sunny and in the 80s.
