Boston Shooting Leads To Moped Chase And 2 Arrests

Two pistols were recovered from the men after shooting someone in broad daylight.

BOSTON, MA — Two men are facing multiple charges after Boston Police recovered two firearms Saturday morning following a moped and foot pursuit in Dorchester.

Ariel Alexander Baez-Lora, 18, of Hyde Park, and Jamari Owens, 30, of Jamaica Plain, were arrested at approximately 2:55 a.m. near Woodrow and Milton avenues after officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force saw two people riding a moped in the area of Blue Hill Avenue and Washington Street. Police said the operator failed to stop at multiple red lights while officers continued to observe the moped.

During the incident, officers heard multiple gunshots coming from the area of Westview Street. Responding officers found an adult man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers later caught up with the moped near Woodrow Avenue, where the operator allegedly collided with a police vehicle while attempting to turn right onto Milton Avenue. The moped became entangled with the vehicle before both occupants allegedly got off and fled on foot.

During the pursuit, officers reportedly saw Baez-Lora remove a firearm from his waistband and throw it onto the roof of 6 Milton Ave. before he was apprehended. Police recovered the firearm, which was determined to be a .40-caliber Glock 27.

Other officers pursued Owens, who reportedly lost his footing and fell to the ground before a struggle ensued. Police allegedly recovered a Glock 19 from Owens' waistband during the altercation.

Baez-Lora is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, firearm violation with one prior violent or drug crime, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.

Owens is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, third offense, firearm violation with two prior violent or drug crimes, possession of ammunition without an FID card, resisting arrest, failure to stop or yield, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
