New Cowboy Bar Coming To East Boston

BOSTON, MA — A new cowboy bar centered around live music and animal rescue is preparing to open in East Boston's Maverick Square.

The Spur will open at 34 Maverick Square in the former Eddie C's space. The Spur Bar LLC recently received approval from the Boston Licensing Board to take over the former bar's seven-day all-alcohol license, with Joseph Skoczylas listed as manager and a 2 a.m. closing time. The approximately 1,650-square-foot space will include one large room with a 14-seat bar and four bathrooms, according to the licensing application.

The Spur describes itself as a cowboy bar rather than a traditional country bar, with plans to feature live music spanning multiple genres alongside drinks and other entertainment. Animal rescue will also play a significant role in the business, with a portion of its proceeds expected to support rescue organizations.

The idea grew in part from Skoczylas' adoption of a pit bull named Ghost approximately eight years ago and his subsequent involvement with animal rescue efforts. Skoczylas has also worked with rescue horses, including helping care for and train horses before they were placed in new homes. He and co-owner Corinne Balesano later adopted another dog named Zero after he was rescued in Texas.

According to The Spur, Zero had previously been used as a bait dog before being abandoned, picked up by animal control and eventually placed on a shelter euthanasia list. Texas-based Paws Saving Paws intervened before Zero was eventually adopted by Skoczylas and Balesano. The business plans to eventually accept direct donations for animal rescue efforts in addition to supporting organizations through proceeds from the bar.

Live music is expected to be a regular part of The Spur and will not be limited to country music. Musician Ryan Demaray currently lists several October performances at the Maverick Square bar, with the first set for Thursday, Oct. 8, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Additional performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14, and Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The Spur has already participated in events around East Boston ahead of its opening, including helping organize and support a Country Night along the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway in August featuring the Dan Lyons Band.

The new bar will take over a space with a lengthy history as a neighborhood drinking establishment. Eddie C's most recently operated at 34 Maverick Square before closing in 2025, while Charlie Zuff's Cafe and Vincent's Bar-B-Que also previously operated at the property.

An official opening date for The Spur has yet to be announced.
