BOSTON, MA — Two people were taken to the hospital after a three-alarm fire broke out at a Brighton apartment building early Saturday morning, according to the Boston Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 117 Brainerd Road at approximately 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. According to the department, heavy flames were coming from first-floor units of the four-story brick building when crews arrived. Second and third alarms were quickly ordered as firefighters worked to help residents get out of the building.
A total of six people were rescued by firefighters, while another person sheltered on the roof due to heavy smoke conditions. Approximately 20 people and their pets were able to evacuate on their own. Two residents escaped through a window after smoke prevented them from leaving through their door.
An adult and a child were hospitalized. At least 38 residents were displaced. Their conditions were not immediately known.
Brookline firefighters also sent an engine company to assist at the scene. Boston crews later began gathering hose lines as operations wound down. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
