Three Bay State restaurants ranked among The Daily Meal's 101 best pizzas in America for 2017.

It's a hotly contested topic, and one in which Massachusetts typically falls short: Where is the best pizza in the United States? Many consider Chicago and New York to be the top contenders, but this year, several other states are heating up the competition for the coveted title of best pizza in the U.S. In 2017, three Massachusetts pizzerias made the cut for online foodie bible the Daily Meal's list of the 101 Best Pizzas in America.

No. 62: Galleria Umberto, 289 Hanover St., Boston. The North End sleeper hit is frequently overshadowed by larger shops like Santarpio's and Regina, but it could be one of "America's best cheap slice places," the Daily Meal says.
No. 61: Area Four, 500 Technology Square, Cambridge. Owners Michael Krupp and Jeff Pond use local and sustainable ingredients, homemade dough and cheese and fire it up in a wood oven. The result? "A pizza whose style is kind of like a neo-Neapolitan with a super-charred cornicione on steroids," the Daily Meal notes.
