Power Issue Prompts Blue Line Evacuation, Under Harbor

Power is restored to the Blue Line, says the MBTA after riders tweeted photos this morning of an underground evacuation Thursday.

BOSTON, MA — Service on the Blue Line returned to normal after hundreds had to evacuate a stalled train underground during the Thursday morning commute following a power problem, according to the MBTA. The MBTA tweeted that power is restored to the Blue Line.

Blue Line riders tweeted this morning they had to evacuate a train that stalled underground between the Maverick and Aquarium stations shortly before 9 a.m. They made their way on foot back toward Maverick and climbed out through an emergency stairwell.

One rider reported hearing "a crack and a flash" as the train entered the Maverick station. MBTA officials said it was down to single-track operation between Government Center and the Airport and was running shuttles buses between Government Center and Maverick. Photos tweeted out by riders showed hundreds of people walking through tunnels and up and out.
