WASHINGTON, DC - New England's rail fans received good news recently when Amtrak announced the imminent return of its daily cross-country services.

Starting May 24th passengers will be able to connect daily via Chicago to cities in the country's northwest, south and southwest.

The Empire Builder will head to Portland and Seattle via Minneapolis/St Paul. The Texas Eagle will head to Los Angeles via St. Louis, Dallas, and San Antonio, whilst the California Zephyr will turn to northern California, to San Francisco, via Omaha, Denver and Salt Lake.

The following week, on May 31st, Massachusetts will regain its direct daily link to Chicago with the return of the Lake Shore Limited, traveling via Worcester, Springfield, Albany and Buffalo.

The same day, May 31st, a more direct service to Los Angeles will come back on stream with the reintroduction of the daily Southwest Chief, heading to California via Kansas City, Albuquerque and Flagstaff.

Finally on June 7th, Amtrak will reintroduce the Crescent, Palmetto, Silver Meteor and Silver Star services, providing daily connections to the southeast of the country - Miami, Atlanta, Raleigh, Savannah, Orlando and New Orleans.

Last year Amtrak's long distance trains were reduced to running a less than daily service as a result of the pandemic. The reintroduction of daily service is possible due to funding provided by the stimulus package, approved by Congress and signed by the President earlier this year.
