Boston's 2025 Mayoral Campaign Revisited

As Yawu Miller reported in the June 19, 2025 issue of the Bay State Banner, "the NAACP Boston Branch is calling on the administration of Mayor Michelle Wu to halt demolition on White Stadium" because, according to its recent press statement, NAACP Boston Branch members "have serious concerns about the current $200 million proposal to redevelop White Stadium into an 11,000-seat venue to be leased to Boston Unity Soccer Partners (BUSP), a private, for-profit entity."

In addition, according to the same NAACP Boston Branch press release, the proposal of the Boston City Hall administration of U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren's Democratic Party protegee, Wu, "lacks adequate plans for public transit access and parking, placing the burden of traffic, air pollution, noise and congestion on surrounding neighborhoods," and "proposed parking restrictions would require nearby residents to apply for event permits just to host family gatherings--potentially stifling essential community life, including cookouts and birthday celebrations."

In the view of the NAACP Boston Branch (which on its website claims to have 1,300 members), with respect to the Wu administration and the for-profit BUSP's proposed White Stadium redevelopment project, "crucially, the City has never seriously considered a fully public renovation plan that would preserve the stadium for student and community use without corporate involvement."

So, not surprisingly, according to Yawu Miller's Bay State Banner article, the NAACP Boston Branch is demanding that the Wu administration: 1. release an "alternative renovation plan for the stadium that the community can review;" 2. finalize "plans in collaboration with local neighborhood associations;" and 3. "commit to meeting or exceeding the Boston Resident Jobs Policy mandating a majority of construction jobs go to Boston residents and people of color."

One reason, though, that the demands and political empowerment and economic survival needs of Boston's working-class communities of all racial backgrounds are likely to continue to be ignored, neglected or not prioritized by Boston's City Hall in 2025 might be because Boston is still one of the largest U.S. cities never to have elected a Black man as its mayor? Despite the Establishment media of Boston's local corporate power structure self-promoting of its gentrified "New Boston" as being a "politically progressive" city.

And, despite the fact that the 2025 Democratic Party's mayoral primary election in New York City was recently won by a 33-year-old candidate, Zohran Mamdani, who endorsed a rent freeze in 2025 for NYC's renter and tenant majority and endorsed U.S. antiwar Movement's BDS campaign that demands an end to U.S. corporate investment in Israel; while Boston's mayor since 2022, the 40-year-old Michelle Wu, has failed to endorse a rent freeze for Boston's renter and tenant majority, has failed to endorse the BDS campaign and, in April 2024, authorized Boston Police Department officers to arrest 118 pro-BDS antiwar protesters on the campus of Emerson College in Downtown Boston.
