MA Boy, 13, Loses Part Of Hand In Fireworks Incident

The Wednesday fireworks mishap follows a July 4 Cape Cod incident where a man was gravely injured.

BOSTON, MA — A 13-year-old boy lost part of his hand and a girl suffered burns after a firework exploded while the boy was trying to light it in Hyde Park Wednesday evening, according to a police report obtained by Patch.

The report describes the boy's injuries as a partial amputation of the right hand that is not life threatening. According to the report, the girl was treated for burns to her left wrist and redness on her upper body.

According to the report, the boy found the single, round, medium-sized discarded firework with no wick attached in a parking lot on Margaretta Drive. The boy attempted to light the firework in his hand when it exploded, the report said.

The incident follows a July 4 mishap in Yarmouth where a 40-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries due to a fireworks explosion.

Massachusetts has some of the strictest fireworks laws in the nation, banning the devices down to even handheld sparklers. Even still, about two dozen people in the state have been burned or injured in fireworks accidents over the last decade, according to the state Department of Fire Services.
