As America’s 250th anniversary celebrations continue, the State Library of Massachusetts will welcome celebrated author and historian Byron Williams as part of its monthly Author Talks series. Williams will discuss his latest book, Liberty and Equality in America: Examining the Radical and Paradoxical Legacy of the Declaration of Independence. Guided by the notion of contradiction, Liberty and Equality in America examines the enduring tension between the ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the paradoxes that have shaped the American experiment. Drawing on his work as a historian, author and educator, Williams offers a timely perspective on the Declaration’s promises of liberty and equality and the complicated history of those ideals in practice. The program will feature a presentation from Williams, followed by an audience Q&A and an opportunity for attendees to purchase copies of his book and have them signed. As Massachusetts, and Boston in particular, reflects on its pivotal role in the American Revolution and the founding of the nation, Williams provides a compelling voice on the Declaration’s enduring legacy and the questions it continues to raise 250 years later.
