David Ortiz is recovering at Massachusetts General Hospital after a second surgery overnight. Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, said in a statement released by the Red Sox that her husband is "stable, awake, and resting comfortably this morning" after what his spokesperson said was an exploratory surgery. Tiffany Ortiz said the Red Sox icon is expected to remain in the intensive care unit the next few days.

Ortiz has been alert, talked to family and "even flashed that smile," his spokesperson, Leo López, said. He will have very limited visits as doctors closely monitor his status over the next day or two.

Ortiz got to MGH late Monday night, landing at Logan Airport and ending up at the hospital just a couple miles from where the Red Sox were playing at Fenway Park. The Red Sox honored Ortiz before the game, and fans chanted his name throughout the night.

"I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and love that we have received during this incredibly difficult time," Tiffany Ortiz said. "We ask for privacy as David works toward recovery."

Ortiz was shot Sunday night in his hometown of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. He had emergency surgery there to remove part of his colon. His gall bladder and liver also tool damage.
