David Ortiz "remains in guarded condition" in the intensive care unit of Massachusetts General Hospital, where he continues to recover from Sunday night's shooting. His wife, Tiffany Ortiz, updated fans in a statement released Thursday morning by the Red Sox. She thanked the man who rushed the ex-slugger to the hospital in the Dominican Republic and the "guardian angels" who worked on him there.

"I want to take this opportunity to offer our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Eliezer Salvador, owner of Presidente Sports, for your quick thinking and swift action on Sunday night," Tiffany Ortiz said. "Your heroism and selflessness were the first steps to ensuring David could get the urgent care he required. For that, we are eternally grateful."

Salvador, an acquaintance of Ortiz, according to The Boston Globe, brought him to his car and sped to the Abel González Clinic. It was there doctors performed emergency surgery on Ortiz, partially removing some organs.

“To the amazing surgeons, medical team, and staff at the Abel González Clinic in the Dominican Republic, there are no words to express our gratitude for the amazing care you provided," Tiffany Ortiz continued. "Without you, our story could have had a tragic ending. You will forever be our guardian angels."

Six people, including the man who fired a bullet into the back of Ortiz were detained in connection with the shooting, Dominican authorities said Wednesday. Police were still searching for the mastermind of the attack, who they say paid about $7,800 to the person who coordinated it.
