False Start: Boston Globe Jumps Gun on Super Bowl 'Loss'
For some print subscribers this morning, the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history never took place.
Admit it, some of you turned off the game at halftime. Some of you, like Mark Wahlberg, maybe even left the game before the Patriots' epic comeback Sunday night in Houston. It's OK, at least you can lie about it.
The Boston Globe, however, is on record having given up.
The earliest editions of published papers show some editors apparently weren't keeping the faith or the time-honored tradition of waiting for a final score before declaring victory or defeat.

Subscribers in Florida saw Tom Brady crumpled in despair on the front page with a headline that read "A Bitter End."

The Globe's sin is pretty egregious, considering the Dorchester office rests about 22 miles north of Foxborough Stadium. Playing the editions game is tough in newspapers, but this is what happens when a company says it doesn't want to be the "paper of record" anymore in favor of being a buzz-wordier "organization of interest."
Early editions of other outlets didn't shy away from the fact that the Falcons were the dominant team for much of the game, but they left it open. To wit, here's an early Washington Post:

It isn't quite "Dewey Defeats Truman" in the 1948 presidential election, but it's some egg on the face.
