Hydrogen Peroxide Spill Prompts Evacuation At East Boston Hotel

The spill prompted a hazmat unit response Friday morning.

BOSTON, MA —A 5-gallon container of hydrogen peroxide that leaked on the roof of an East Boston hotel Friday morning prompted a Level 2 hazmat response and evacuation.

The top two floors of a hotel in East Boston was evacuated as officials in hazmat gear set to containing a Level-2 hazmat spill on the roof, according to fire officials.

Guests who were evacuated from the Embassy Suites top two floors are now back in their rooms. Fire officials said no one was injured and the evacuation was only a precaution.

Fire officials define a Level 2 hazmat incident as: fitting one of the following:

  • a spill in excess of 50 gallons of petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel oil, fuel oil, etc.;
  • unconfirmed reports of chemical spills, leaking containers, process malfunction accidents;
  • fires producing irritating, corrosive or flammable vapors or other hazardous conditions.
