MA Companies Still Hiring During Coronavirus Pandemic
As unemployment soars amid the coronavirus pandemic, many Massachusetts companies are still looking to hire.
BOSTON — Since the new coronavirus pandemic shut down large swaths of the Massachusetts economy, unemployment levels have reached record highs every week.
As the state's economy re-opens in phases, many of those jobs are expected to come back, but not all of them will. Massachusetts restaurant owners warned. last week that 60,000 of the 150,000 jobs lost so far may never come back.
The number of Massachusetts residents applying for first-time unemployment benefits during the week that ended May 9 was 44,467, according to Thursday's U.S. Department of Labor report. So far, 859,757 Massachusetts workers have filed for unemployment during the pandemic. The job losses have hit poor, urban cities like Lawrence and Springfield, and towns with seasonal economies like those on Cape Cod the hardest, according to the report.
