Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo will resign Tuesday, bringing an end to his 12-year run and opening the door for another longtime member of the Legislature to take the reins.

DeLeo, 70, announced Monday he intends to step down, confirming a week's worth of reports that the Winthrop Democrat was nearing his final days on Beacon Hill after 30 years. He has reportedly been in talks with Northeastern University, his alma mater, to take a position there.

It is believed Majority Leader Ron Mariano has the support to succeed DeLeo. Mariano, 74, has been in the House since 1991.

DeLeo's six consecutive terms leading the House is a record.

"My pride with what we have collectively accomplished over the last 12 years will never be diminished," DeLeo said in his letter of resignation. "This House has consistently led the way and provided solutions to some of the most complex and challenging public policy problems of our time."

Long Lines At Logan Airport Despite Warnings To Avoid Holiday Travel

TSA screened 1,284,599 people at airports across the country Sunday, the highest total since the pandemic began, according to the agency.

A TSA spokesperson said 600,000 people were screened on Christmas day and another one million travelers the day after Christmas.

Overall, Sunday marked the sixth day in the last 10 that more than one million people traveled at airports nationwide.

Comcast To Unveil Data Cap Overage Charges, Increases In 2021

Comcast is implementing an increase in service costs and fees next year including the implementation of a new data cap fee or unlimited usage charge for all Internet customers.

The new charges, tucked into the additional information section of recent monthly bills, include a new Xfinity Internet Data Plan of 1.2 terabytes of usage per household, per month. Any usage above that amount will be billed at $10 per each 50 gigabytes with a maximum overage of $100 in fees billed per month. Customers can also choose to pay $30 a month more for unlimited use. Customers who have a $14 a month leased xFi Gateway router, which offers extra features such as parental controls to shut off devices, can add on unlimited service for $11 per month, according to a company spokesperson.

Customers who do not sign up for the new unlimited usage charge, will be alerted at 75, 90, and 100 percent of data plan usage before the fee is issued.
