Marathon Bombing Charity Scammer Denied Release

Branden Mattier and his brother were convicted of defrauding a victims' compensation fund out of more than $2 million.

BOSTON, MA - A Boston man convicted of defrauding a Boston Marathon victims' compensation fund with his brother by using the name of a dead aunt will remain behind bars while he challenges the ruling.

Branden Mattier and Domunique Grice were found guilty two years ago of scamming The One Fund out of more than $2 million.

The two men filed a claim with the organization alleging their aunt lost her legs in the 2013 attacks. They were both sentenced to three years in prison in 2014.

Now Mattier is challenging his conviction; he appealed to the Supreme Judicial Court to be released while the case is reviewed, WHDH reported.

But on Monday the court upheld a judge's ruling that Mattier failed to prove that the evidence against him was obtained during an unlawful arrest.
