Mass RMV Changes: REAL ID, Closures, Wait Times

The RMV will close Thursday for some major overhauls. Here's what that means for you.

What could make the wait times at the RMV worse? Some improvements, apparently. The state is installing a new software system this weekend to make sure the RMV gets in line with new federally approved licenses called REAL ID. What does that mean for you? Here's a quick look:

Closures

The RMV will be closed between Thursday night and Monday morning as crews install new software. This means that from 5 p.m. Thursday (or earlier depending on the storm) to 9 a.m. Monday you will be unable to use RMV services either in their offices or online. No transactions will be available. Vehicle inspections will also be suspended during this time.

Wait times

When the RMV reopens Monday morning, expect an increase in those already dreadful wait times. There will be new procedures and software to fiddle with, and a wave of customers due to the closures and the new ID system may have you waiting, state transportation officials said.

REAL ID

The primary source of these changes are because of new federally approved licenses that are scheduled to begin being issued in Massachusetts Monday. We've already tackled the basics of REAL IDs and more need-to-know details surrounding them (so click on that link to read more on that).

The highlights: Beginning in October 2020, Massachusetts drivers' licenses that are not REAL ID compliant will not be accepted as a valid ID for domestic air travel, accessing federal facilities, or entering nuclear power plants.

You won't technically need a REAL ID if you have a passport - your passport would suffice in those instances, and your non-REAL ID drivers' license will remain valid for driving and getting into bars.

Citizens can bring in a certified copy of their birth certificates or a U.S. passport. It will cost $50 to renew a license, which need to be renewed every five years.
