MBTA Votes to End Late-Night Service

The move follows the MBTA's announcement that it will significantly reduce its operating budget.

BOSTON, MA - The MBTA will end its late-night service experiment by March 18, Fiscal Management Control Board members voted, 4-0, Monday afternoon

The service had extended subway lines - and some bus routes - by 90 minutes on Friday and Saturday.

The MBTA, which earlier Monday announced it intends on slashing its operating budget by 43 percent in the 2017 fiscal year, could simply not afford to continue pilot program, according to board members.

Hundreds of supporters of the late-night service have made their voices known, arguing that it reduces drunken driving and opens up job opportunities for servers and Greater Boston’s many students.
