Multi-Alarm Fire In Winthrop Displaces 110, Injures 4, Kills Pets

A huge fire broke out Friday at noon in an apartment building on Veterans Road in Winthrop. The cause is under investigation.

WINTHROP, MA — About 110 people are displaced, a few animals are dead, and at least four people are hospitalized following a multi-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Winthrop Friday. No firefighters were injured.

The fire broke out around 12:15 p.m. Friday on the third floor of an apartment building on Veterans Road, firefighters said. It spread across the roof to the apartment building next door. Crews nearby reported heavy smoke and fire billowing from the building, and residents trying to escape.

Firefighters from numerous communities, including Lynn, Chelsea, Malden, Saugus, Revere and Boston provided mutual aid. The Massachusetts State Police and Massachusetts Port Authority were also on-scene.

Four residents were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a statement from the department. They are all expected to survive. An unspecified number of animals died in the fire, however.

The nearest hydrant was 800 feet away and the building did not have working sprinklers, Winthrop Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Calandra told NBC Boston.

The 110 displaced residents are being helped by the Red Cross, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Winthrop Fire Department, and the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.
