New Seafood Eatery To Debut In Longtime MA Oyster Bar

BOSTON, MA — A new seafood restaurant from the team behind Saltie Girl is coming to a longtime South End dining spot.

The Shell Bar is scheduled to open in spring 2027 at 550 Tremont St., the former home of B&G Oysters. Restaurateur Kathy Sidell’s latest venture will combine a raw bar with an elevated take on a traditional fish fry under Sidell Hospitality Culinary Director Matthew Gaudet.

Plans call for a dark, intimate dining room and a menu focused on refined but approachable seafood. One featured offering, called Kettle-Fried Fish, will include whole and filleted fish prepared as an upscale version of a fish-fry basket.

Desserts will be developed by SweetBoy founder Ben Sidell, who also serves as managing director of Sidell Hospitality.

The restaurant is expected to have 38 indoor seats and 22 patio seats, with the possibility of additional sidewalk seating and a four-seat bar, according to Boston Magazine. The team also plans to apply for a full liquor license.

B&G Oysters operated at the address from 2003 until late 2024, according to the magazine. The Barbara Lynch restaurant was known for its raw bar, lobster rolls and seasonal seafood dishes.

Renovations are planned throughout the winter ahead of The Shell Bar’s opening. The restaurant expects to serve lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.

Sidell’s other Boston restaurants include Saltie Girl in Back Bay and Stephanie’s on Newbury, which has operated since 1994.
