BOSTON, MA —A man was arraigned Thursday on charges he opened fire outside an Orange Line T station, critically injuring a 24-year-old man, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Lushaun Gay, 27, was arraigned in Roxbury Municipal Court in connection with a shooting at Mass Ave station on the MBTA’s Orange Line Wednesday night that prompted Northeastern University police to ask students living nearby to shelter in place.

Assistant District Attorney Lynn Feigenbaum requested bail of $100,000; Judge Pamela Dashiell set bail in the amount of $75,000.

Feigenbaum told the court that the 34-year-old man who was shot was with a group of others at the Mass Ave station at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, when a man in a gray hooded sweatshirt, later identified as Gay, came up to them with a gun. Police said earlier there was a bit of a physical fight and then Gay opened fire, hitting a man multiple times, prosecutors said. Gay then rode away on a bicycle through Southwest Corridor Park, and was later found under some stairs in a courtyard near Columbus Avenue and Dilworth Street, according to police.

The man who was shot was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he is in critical condition, according to the DA's office.

Shortly after the shooting, a witness who had heard the gunfire reported seeing a man throw a bicycle into a fenced-off alley in the area of Columbus Avenue and then hop over the fence. Boston Police then found Gay shirtless in the alley. He allegedly made incriminating statements to officers and indicated that there was a firearm in his backpack, prosecutors said. Officers found a loaded Jimenez Arms 9mm pistol and a gray sweatshirt in his backpack.

Because this happened on state property, State troopers are investigating. Gay is scheduled to return to court Sept. 19.

State Police earlier reported that Crime Scene Troopers and Ballisticians recovered physical evidence where the man was apprehended, reviewed nearby surveillance video, and interviewed several relevant witnesses.
